All About Pixie Haircuts
When we think of pixie haircuts, our minds immediately go to the classic and sleek look. However, there are tons of variations when it comes to this cut, and it all has to do with your preference and style.
“Pixie cuts are known for their short length, typically ranging from half an inch to a few inches long,” Pinegar tells us. “The length may vary based on personal preference and the specific style desired.”
In addition to the short length, pixies often feature a shorter cut on the sides with a slightly longer top. You’ll also often see pixies with texture and layers, according to Pinegar, who says, “Pixie cuts often incorporate texture or layers to add dimension and movement to the hair. This can be achieved through various cutting techniques such as razoring, point cutting, or layering, resulting in a soft and tousled look.”
How Do You Know If You Should Get a Pixie Haircut?
Not sure if you should get a pixie haircut? There are a few factors to consider, from hair type to face shape and maintenance needs.
Hair Type
The first thing you should take a look at is your hair type. Whether your hair is curly, straight, or even wavy, it’s absolutely possible to look good with a pixie cut. “The texture of your hair may affect how the pixie cut looks and behaves,” shares Pinegar. “For example, curly hair may require more styling to maintain its shape, while straight hair may appear sleeker with less effort.”
Face Shape
Next, determine your face shape. Pixies look particularly amazing on those with oval, square, and even heart-shaped faces. However, that’s not to say anyone won’t look good with a pixie!
Pinegar goes on to add, “Pixie cuts can help accentuate cheekbones and jawlines, creating a flattering frame for the face. However, if you have a round face shape, you may want to consider a pixie cut with longer layers or side-swept bangs to elongate the face.”
Maintenance
Perhaps the biggest reason why people stray from pixies is that they require a lot of maintenance. If you’re the type of person who loathes going to the salon, this cut won’t be for you. However, if you don’t mind going in for regular trims, we say go for it!
“Pixie cuts typically require regular maintenance to keep them looking sharp and well-groomed,” Pinegar tells Timeless Hairstyles. “Depending on how fast your hair grows, you may need to visit the salon for touch-ups every 4-6 weeks to maintain the shape of the cut.”
How to Maintain a Pixie Haircut
As we mentioned, pixie maintenance is going to be key to keeping your cut looking fresh and sharp at all times. In order to look well-groomed, follow these tips:
Regular Trims
Pinegar says to get regular trims every 4-6 weeks. This ensures your length never grows out too much!
Proper Washing and Conditioning
When rocking a pixie, you’ll likely be using lots of product, so it’s important to thoroughly wash everything out (that means double shampoo!). Pinegar adds, “Wash your hair regularly with a gentle shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all products to prevent buildup, especially in short hair where it’s more noticeable.”
Styling Products
Another important aspect of maintaining a pixie has to do with the styling products you opt to use. Look for products that add texture and can properly hold your hair throughout the day.
“Invest in styling products designed for short hair, such as pomades, waxes, or styling creams,” says Pinegar. “These products can help add texture, hold, and definition to your pixie cut, allowing you to achieve different styles and looks.”
Avoid Over-Washing
Even though washing might seem like a breeze with short hair, we beg you to not over-wash it! Pinegar warns, “While it’s essential to keep your hair clean, over-washing can strip the hair of its natural oils and lead to dryness. Aim to wash your hair 2-3 times a week, or as needed, depending on your hair type and lifestyle.”
Protective Styling
Just because pixie cuts are short doesn’t mean you can skip out on protective styling. This is especially easy to do when you go to bed at night! “When sleeping, consider using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent frizz,” shares Pinegar.
How to Style a Pixie Haircut
Curly/Coily
If you have curly or coily hair, you’ll want to make sure you keep your locks as hydrated as can be. Pinegar suggests using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, as it will “help retain moisture and prevent frizz.” On hair wash days, go in with a leave-in conditioner and a curl-enhancing product. Once you’ve done all of that, it’s onto styling!
You can either air dry or diffuse your hair—it’s up to you! For this step, Pinegar says to “gently scrunch your hair while drying to encourage curl formation.” You can also incorporate protective styling into your pixie cut, using techniques like twist-outs, bantu knots, or braids. Of these specific styles, Pinegar says they can “also help stretch your curls and add volume to your pixie cut.”
Straight
For those with straight hair, dry shampoo is about to become your new best friend. Not only does it keep oils at bay, but it also provides hair with texture and grit.
As far as blow-drying goes, Pinegar shares the following advice: “Use a round brush and a blow dryer to add volume and texture to your straight pixie cut. Focus the airflow downward to smooth the hair and create lift at the roots. For added volume, blow-dry the hair in the opposite direction of its natural growth pattern.” To style, you can use a flat iron for even more sleekness, or, you can go in with a curling wand to give a slight bend to your longer pieces.
Pixie Haircuts to Try Out
Textured Pixie
When we think of a textured pixie cut, Ruby Rose comes to mind. With choppy layers and an almost messy look, her lived-in pixie is effortless and cool. “The textured pixie cut features layers and choppy ends to create a tousled, edgy look,” says Pinegar. “It’s characterized by its dimensional texture and versatility in styling.”
Sleek and Classic Pixie
You can’t go wrong with a sleek and classic pixie—it’s totally timeless! If you’re into more of a polished look like Halle Berry’s, this is one cut you should absolutely try out. “It typically features short, uniform layers and neatly trimmed edges for a sophisticated look,” Pinegar adds.
Asymmetrical Pixie
We also adore asymmetrical pixie cuts. They’re dramatic, bold, and a fun take on the cut! “The asymmetrical pixie cut is defined by its uneven lengths and dramatic angles,” shares Pinegar. “It often features shorter hair on one side of the head, creating a bold and modern aesthetic.” We like looking to Rihanna for some inspo on this particular ‘do.
Our Favorite Products to Use for Pixie Haircuts
Evo Salty Dog Salt Spray ($34)
A salt spray is perfect for pixies, as it adds texture and volume to any look. Pinegar especially loves this product from Evo, stating, “This salt spray adds texture and volume to short hair, making it perfect for creating tousled, beachy waves or enhancing the natural texture of pixie cuts.”
Dae Fairy Duster Volumizing Dry Shampoo Powder ($30)
Dae’s Dry Shampoo Powder is magic in a bottle. Not only does it have the dry shampoo aspect, but it also gives hair texture and grit, making it a great choice when your hair needs a little bit of TLC in between washes.
