All About the Cowgirl Bob
From the Italian bob to the French bob, lob, and so much more, it’s hard to keep track of all the bob haircuts we have available to us. So, what sets the cowgirl bob apart?
Jerome Lordet, owner and director of Jerome Lordet Salon, tells us, “It’s a slightly shaggier bob—last year, people asked for a ‘cowgirl’ haircut, which just meant adding a bit of undone-looking, slightly shaggy or choppy layers to a shoulder-length cut. This brings it up to the chin and adds choppy bangs.”
How Do You Know If You Should Get a Cowgirl Bob?
Not sure if you’re a candidate for the cowgirl bob? Unfortunately, this style isn’t going to work for everyone—especially if you have a stubborn calic that doesn’t allow for bangs—because the bangs are what really pull this whole look together (but that’s not to say a look without bangs won’t work!).
We asked Lordet what he thinks, and he had lots to say, telling us, “The simple solution to estimating if you should try out a cowgirl bob or a short haircut is following the 2.25-inch rule. If the tip of your chin is over 2.25 inches away from the tip of the lobe of your ear, then your hair is more suited to pull off a shorter look.
Therefore, this look is more appropriate for those with an oval face shape. This will work best on straight or just slightly wavy hair to get the desired look without heat styling.”
How to Maintain a Cowgirl Bob
The shorter your hair is, the more often you’re going to want to go in for trims and cuts to maintain a fresh look. And as the cowgirl bob is on the shorter side, Lordet tells us you’re going to want to go in for a trim at least every eight weeks to maintain the perfect length.
In regards to daily maintenance, he goes on to tell us, “The style of it is undone, so adding a little bit of a volumizing product throughout the hair and letting it air dry should achieve the look. Depending on if your hair has a natural wave, you can use a curling iron to add a little more movement and piece-yness to the look, and finish with some texturizing spray on the ends.”
How to Style a Cowgirl Bob
Curly/Coily Hair
It is absolutely possible to rock a cowgirl bob with curly or coily hair! Just make sure that when you’re consulting with your stylist, you get reassurance from them that they have experience with curls.
“The volume curls get, especially when they’re shorter, may give this cut a more mullet-like look,” Lordet tells Timeless Hairstyles. “If that isn’t what you’re going for, consider a slightly longer choppy lob, and doing more of a curtain bang—or forgoing bangs and opting for layers towards the front—so it falls more like the “cowgirl” look. Point cut curls dry to help the ends fall perfectly piece-y.”
Straight Hair
Straight hair is going to be relatively easy to style, and Lordet even tells us that allowing it to air dry is actually going to be beneficial for volume—how amazing is that?
“For those with straight hair, let your hair air dry after showering,” he shares. “Using a blow dryer may give a puffier and more voluminous look than what you are going for. Once you air dry it, take a one-inch curler and slightly curl some pieces in alternating directions to give some body and shape. Then, add texture spray to the ends to give it an effortless look and have the perfect cowgirl bob.”
Natural/Wavy Hair
If you have natural or wavy hair, you definitely have it the easiest when it comes to styling. While you can absolutely go in with a curling iron or waver to give it some extra definition, Lordet says you can skip that altogether and simply go in with texture spray.
“After letting their hair air-dry, it is up to you to decide how you want to style it,” he tells us. “You can use a brush to play around with the parting and positioning of your hair and add texture spray to assist with the exact look you want.”
3 Cowgirl Bob Haircuts to Try Out
Megan Fox
When we first saw Megan’s cowgirl bob debut a few months back, we had the sudden urge to part with our length and chop it all off. That’s how good she makes it look!
Lordet describes it as a “shaggy bob with a slightly wispy bang.” He also adds, “To get this look, you’d want to ask your hairstylist for a French bob with some shaggy layers towards the ends, and a longer, wispy bang. While Fox’s layers are focused towards the very end, you could incorporate more layers for more movement.
Dixie D’Amelio
Another celeb who looks killer with a cowgirl bob is Dixie D’Amelio, and this slightly curlier version is all too easy to recreate.
“Tucked behind the ears and a little more stylized, this version has less layers and leans into texture with the curled ends, while still keeping the wispy, piece-y, straight across longer bang that falls into the eyes,” Lordet shares.
Joy Corrigan
If the bang life isn’t for you but you still want to get a cowgirl bob, take note of Joy Corrigan’s ‘do!
A client of Lordet’s, he describes her look as “a slightly longer piece-y bob without the bangs. She shows how straight hair can be slightly bent with a curling iron to highlight the texture of the cut and the piece-y feel of the ends.”
