We purchased the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo for our writer to put to the test. Keep reading for our full, hands-on product review.

Although for many of us, haircare is all about efficacy and luxury, sometimes, you want something a little more fun. Enter, the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo, which is reminiscent of haircare products of our teens – but in the best way. Sure, the packaging is a little retro and clunky, and sure, the scent is a little juvenile – but underneath all that is a surprisingly solid shampoo option.

About The Brand
OGX is a stylist-founded haircare brand designed to bring high-quality formulas to the masses. The brand is founded on principles of inclusivity, safe ingredients, and environmental kindness.
OGX has a huge range of different haircare lines to suit different needs, including Argan Oil for strengthening, Biotin and Collagen for fine hair, and Tea Tee and Mint for hydration.
The Coconut Milk line is created for moisture, adding softness and strength to dried-out or damaged locks.
About My Hair: Long, Damaged, and Erring on Dry
My hair is pretty naturally oily, but thanks to at-home dye and swimming in a chlorinated pool, I’ve inflicted some pretty intense damage. This means I tend to build my haircare routine around repairing my locks while adding moisture.
Because I swim most days, I need a shampoo that effectively cleans out the chlorine without excessively drying out my locks. If a shampoo has the added bonus of extra moisture or offers strengthening qualities to my hair, then that makes it even more appealing.
I like to follow my shampoo with a fairly heavy-duty conditioner, then apply either a leave-in treatment or an oil. I then want to be able to leave my hair to air dry, feeling clean and soft but without any frizziness or dryness.
Upon reading the packaging of the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo, I was intrigued. Not only was I hopeful about the moisturising prospects, but I absolutely adore coconut scents. The delightful user experience combined with the softening and hydrating results have made the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo a new personal favourite.
The OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo Feel: Foamy and Cleansing
The OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo has a rather thick and substantial texture when it’s squeezed out of the bottle. It has a milky feel, which, given the name of the product line, isn’t hugely surprising.
You don’t need much product to create a luxurious pile of foamy lather, which grips onto the hair to ensure every strand feels clean. It rinses out nicely, leaving hair feeling cleansed but not stripped or squeaky. I didn’t notice any potentially weighty residue in my hair after washing, either.
The Results: Glossy, Bouncy Hair
After washing with the Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo, my hair felt both deeply clean and luxuriously soft. My hair was shiny and glossy, but still felt lightweight and cleansed.
To round out my routine and offer some extra hydration and protection, I used the Bleach London Reincarnation Conditioner, then applied the Davines OI Oil to my locks before air drying. I was super pleased with how my hair looked – fresh and clean, but also soft, strong, and shiny!
The Scent
Aside from how my hair looked and felt after using the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo, I have to say, the scent was the other major selling point. I love coconut scents at any time, but this shampoo has one of the very best. It’s instantly transportive, taking me to a beachside vacation even though I was in a rainy Manchester.
Alongside the heavy hit of coconut, there are more subtle accords of peach and shea butter, which add a creamy luxury to the scent experience. The smell is strongest during use, filling your shower with sweetness, but it doesn’t excessively linger on the hair or potentially clash with your perfume.
The Ingredients: Nice and Clean
OGX’s entire range is designed to prioritise high-quality ingredients for those on a drugstore budget. All OGX products are free from sulfated surfactants, parabens, formaldehyde donors, plastic microbeads, and phthalates, making them gentle on the scalp, your hair, and the planet, too. The line also includes silicone-free and colourant-free product ranges if that is something important to your hair type.
OGX’s Coconut Milk line, in particular, is loaded with natural ingredients that help improve the condition of the hair. Coconut oil provides instant softness and shine, while coconut milk helps add strength to the hair’s individual strands, improving the look and feel over time. There are also egg whites, which offer a hefty dose of protein and hair-loving vitamins. This can improve hair strength and repair damage for boosted elasticity and bounce.
The Value: Second to None
If you’re looking to build an effective and pleasurable-to-use haircare routine on a budget, OGX is a great range to explore. The Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo comes in three sizes – a 3-ounce travel size, a regular 13-ounce size, and a 25.4-ounce salon size. Each offers good value, but the bigger you buy, the better the cost per use.
You can round out your OGX Coconut Milk routine with a conditioner, a hair serum, and an oil mist, all of which are equally affordable. Or, you can mix and match your products from the different OGX ranges, tailoring your haircare routine to your exact needs!

The Amika Normcore Hydrating Shampoo is another great option for anyone wanting a shampoo that both deeply cleanses and effectively hydrates. The product manages to offer smoothness and softness to drier hair types without adding too much excess weight. It also offers a strong dose of fragrance, this time a little more generically fruity.
For more dried-out and damaged hair types, the Olaplex No. 5 Shampoo is absolutely wonderful. The Olaplex range is designed to treat weakened and brittle hair on a strand by strand level, offering a reparative quality to boost strength. But by adding extra strength and healthiness to your hair, you also get a softer, and more moisturised feel over time.
The Final Verdict
For anyone looking to build a haircare routine from the shelves of the drugstore, OGX is hard to beat – and I do believe that their Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo is a standout within the line. Finding a shampoo which cleanses hair without drying it out can be tricky, especially on a tighter budget. But the OGX Coconut Milk Hydrating Shampoo does just that – plus, it smells mouthwateringly delicious.
