The Bottom Line

For anyone who wants a natural scalp treatment oil that feels pleasant to apply and doesn’t cost an inordinate sum, the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil is a worthwhile choice. Oiling your scalp and hair should help improve their condition over time, which can help lead to better hair growth. However, claims that this is a ‘miracle’ product should be taken with a grain of salt.

Many of us with for hair that’s longer, thicker, and healthier feeling, but that’s not always easily achieved. Much of our hair’s length, thickness, and growing prowess is determined solely by our genetics, and the products we use can have little impact.

But recently, reviews of the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil have sprung up on TikTok, with flabbergasted fans promising it really can aid in hair growth, building up a stronger and more substantial mane over time.

So, can a simple (and all-natural) hair oil really deliver on all that?

Read on for my full review.

About The Brand

Mielle Organics was launched in 2014 by Monique Rodriguez, who was inspired to enter the beauty industry “after her healthy hair care regimen for tailbone-length hair became somewhat of a craze among her social media followers,” per the company’s website. The line is designed for natural hair, particularly Types 3 and 4, and offers ranges specifically designed for these different hair types.

The most famous and popular product from the Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil, which went viral on TikTok as users claimed it helped to grow their hair at a miraculous pace. While not marketed specifically to curly and coily hair, the oil does offer instructions that pertain to protective hairstyles.

About My Hair: Long, Damaged, and Sometimes Dry

I’m hard on my hair. I dye it at home every six to eight weeks, but what’s even worse is that I swim in chlorinated water several times per week. If I didn’t work hard to keep my hair in a reasonable condition, it would have all snapped off long ago. I build my haircare routine around repairing and protecting my locks to keep them looking happy and healthy, in spite of all the damage I inflict on them.

After swimming, I tend to wash with a cleansing yet hydrating shampoo, then either use a nourishing conditioner or a hair mask. I also use a leave-in treatment or hair oil on my towel-dried hair to add some extra nourishment, protection, and anti-frizz action while it naturally dries.

But there’s another stage to my haircare routine. Every morning, before I swim, I oil my hair and scalp to offer a layer of protection from the damaging waters of the pool. I tend to use something natural and affordable, like straight avocado oil – but I thought this would be a perfect place to fit the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil into my haircare routine.

Upon reading the packaging of the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil, my interest was piqued. The idea of an oil that could help protect my hair from chlorine while also offering scalp help and potentially boost growth sounded like the perfect three-in-one. And after incorporating the oil in this manner, I have to say, I’m really enjoying it as a part of my haircare arsenal.

The Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp Oil Feel: Thick and Grippy

The Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil feels extremely thick and substantial when dispensed from its pipette. I could see how, for finer hair types, this oil may just be too heavy, even when used as a wash-out treatment. However, if you’re looking for a hair oil that has some serious body, this could be your perfect option.

Once applied, the oil does appear to sink into the hair. If you do use the product as a scalp treatment, it has a pleasantly tingly, invigorating sensation on the scalp, thanks to the inclusion of peppermint oil.

How To Use The Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp Oil

There are three different recommended uses for the Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp Oil. The first is as a scalp treatment, where you massage to oil into your scalp, then comb through and leave it in. This is a use primarily suited to curly and coily hair types, particularly those using protective hairstyles.

The second use is as a daily hair oil. You can apply a drop or two through the ends of damp or towel-dried hair like a typical finishing oil, then style hair as normal. Anyone with finer or straight hair may want to exercise caution using the oil in this way, as it could also weigh the hair down.

The final use, and likely the only suitable use for hairs of Type 1 and 2, is as a split-end treatment. In this instant, you use the Mielle oil almost like a hair mask, saturating the hair in oil, allowing it to sink in for 10 minutes or more, and then washing your hair as normal.

This was how I used the product, applying all over (including to the scalp) before swimming, then washing and conditioning my hair after exercise.

The Results: Protection and Nourishment

After washing my hair following treatment with the oil, I was pleasantly surprised by how strong and healthy it was feeling. The plethora of different natural oils clearly protected my hair from the chlorine of the pool, while the peppermint oil offered my scalp some much-needed TLC.

Over time, I can certainly see how incorporating this oil into my routine could help boost my hair length and strength by minimizing breakage and keeping my scalp in a healthy condition, too.

The Scent: Natural Menthol

I’m extremely partial to a natural minty fragrance, finding it deeply invigorating and stimulating. This is exactly the vibe the Mielle oil provides.

The ingredients list contains no artificial fragrance, meaning the herbaceous aroma comes solely from the essential oils the product contains. Alongside peppermint oil, you may pick up on notes of tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus.

The Ingredients: The Power of Nature

The Mielle Rosemary Mint Oil boasts a truly impressive ingredients list.

The most prevalent ingredient is soybean oil, which works as a fantastic carrier oil for the other essential oils, like the eponymous peppermint and rosemary. Pretty much every item on the ingredients list is a recognisable natural product, except for the inclusion of silica, right at the very end.

The oil is formulated with no parabens, no sulfates, no paraffins, no mineral oil, and no DEA.

The Value: An Absolute Bargain

One of the primary reasons this oil gained viral fame is because of its highly affordable price point. In fact, soon after it took off online, it was basically impossible to find the product on shelves.

Now that supply issues have been ironed out, you can typically find a 2-ounce bottle for between $9 and $10. For that price, you’ll have a bottle of multi-use hair oil that’ll last you for months.

Similar Products: Scalp Oil Treatments

The Kiehls Magic Elixir Scalp and Hair Oil Treatment offers similar protective, reparative, and scalp-stimulating qualities to the Mielle. It even uses that same rosemary oil ingredient that has been proven by the NCBI to support hair growth. It’s more expensive, but also a much larger bottle.

The Final Verdict

For anyone looking for a natural hair oil that can protect hair and support growth, the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil is a wonderful choice. There are two small caveats to consider before purchase, however.

This first is that it’s not designed for all hair types, and although my straight hair has found a perfect use for it, it may be a little too thick and heavy for other hair types.

The other is to manage expectations. TikTok hype could have you believing that this oil will have waist-length longs springing from your scalp overnight, and that’s just not a reasonable assumption. However, I can see that over time, continued use of the oil could help aid in hair growth, offer some pampering to your scalp, and help protect longer, damaged hair from breakage.
