The most stylish celebrities know how to put their own spin on classic looks. Case in point? Lana Del Rey’s recent sophisticated updo hairstyle.
While the singer typically wears her hair down in tousled waves, she switched things up with an elegant twisted chignon.
Leave it to Lana Del Rey to turn heads with a hairstyle that is equal parts vintage glamour and modern cool. The acclaimed singer-songwriter recently stepped out rocking an elegant updo that paid homage to classic Hollywood beauty.
On June 13th, Del Rey’s glam team shared a close-up look at the upswept style she wore to accept her Songwriter Icon Award at the National Music Publishers’ Association Annual Meeting in New York City.
The sleek twisted chignon showcased Del Rey’s thick brunette locks pulled back into a high, sophisticated knot at the crown of her head. With a deep side part and face-framing tendrils left to lightly graze her cheekbones, the overall effect was a demure yet utterly glamorous look reminiscent of a 1940s screen siren.
The demure updo perfectly complemented Del Rey’s signature retro makeup styling, which featured a heavily lined brown lip, winged eyeliner, and groomed eyebrows. Her look evoked the timeless glamour of Hollywood icons like Vivien Leigh and Ingrid Bergman.
Her longtime makeup artist Etienne Ortega used products from his Ortega line to create Del Rey’s signature soft glam look.
He sculpted her complexion with the Ethereal Glow Balm highlighters and added a wash of color with a deep brown lip liner topped with clear gloss. Winged eyeliner and wispy lashes completed the vintage-inspired makeup.
Hairstylist Anna Cofone twisted Del Rey’s brunette tresses into an elegant French twist, leaving out a side-swept strand for an effortlessly undone touch. The voluminous updo channeled prom night nostalgia in the most sophisticated way.
For her ensemble, styled by Molly Dickinson, Del Rey donned a classic Chanel tweed skirt suit with a sheer top, black pumps, and dangling earrings. The monochrome look, combined with the bouffant hairstyle, oozed timeless glamour straight from an Old Hollywood movie set.
While updos often veer into overly structured or severe territory, Del Rey’s take had an easy, almost nonchalant elegance. The soft romantic tendrils and slightly tousled texture at the crown gave the style an effortlessly undone touch, preventing it from appearing too stiff or formal.
By putting a fresh spin on a classic updo, Del Rey confirms her status as an urbane style chameleon. From her dramatic winged eyeliner to her neat brows and bold pout she deftly merges retro and contemporary aesthetics.
Her ability to merge nostalgic glamour with a modern edge is unlikely to go out of style anytime soon.
